What Is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a physical therapy that utilises a variety of non-drug, non-surgical techniques to promote maximum recovery from any condition that results in pain and limitation of movement. Chiropractors are trained to diagnose and treat a wide range of acute and chronic musculoskeletal conditions.

The skills of a chiropractor can help in a wide range of conditions; from an athlete recovering from a sports injury, to an older person coping with limitations imposed by the aging process.

It is the policy of our clinic to help each person understand what has caused their injury and to prevent it from recurring. Our aim is to help you achieve your maximum health potential.

Techniques we use

Spinal Manipulative Therapy (SMT)

‘Diversified’ is one style of Spinal Manipulative Therapy (SMT). This technique aims to help improve spinal biomechanics by restoring a patient’s normal range of motion and by removing any nervous system interference. A common interference to the nervous system is the twenty-four moving bones of the spinal column. A loss of normal motion or position of these bones may irritate or interfere with the function of the nervous system by disrupting the transmission of nerve impulses.

Chiropractors aim to improve nervous system function primarily through chiropractic adjustments. After identifying which spinal bones have lost their normal motion or position, a specific manual thrust is administered to free any ‘locked up’ joints. The direction, speed, depth and angle that is used is the result of years of experience, practice and a thorough understanding of spinal mechanics. The energy delivered during the thrust may produce a slight “popping” sound from the shifting of gas and fluids in the joints. All joints of the body can be adjusted to help restore proper range of motion.

SMT is designed to be as specific, safe and as comfortable as possible.

Trigger Point Dry Needling

A technique used to treat Myofascial trigger points, taut palpable spots in the muscle, that present pain, muscle tenderness or stiffness. Treatment involves insertion of a needle into the centre of the trigger point that is gentle, safe, and pain free.

The use of this simple needling technique has proven most effective in reducing pain, increasing muscle flexibility and strength.

Cupping Therapy

A treatment in which suction cups are applied to the skin to increase local blood flow and draw toxins to the skin’s surface.

Cupping is a safe and non-invasive technique used to treat muscle and joint pain and spasms, particularly in the back, and is thought to stimulate blood circulation.

Electrotherapy

Electrotherapy and local modalities are used to assist with pain reduction and the natural healing response via an increase in energy (electrical, sound, light, magnetic, temperature). Electrotherapy and local modalities are methods of pain relief or inflammation reduction that can provide relief and stimulation, to allow you to continue moving and functioning as comfortably as possible.
